The goal logic finds its room

The public-readiness work that has been running across the last several expeditions is not finished. This expedition continued it - but came at the work from a different angle than the ones before.

Previous expeditions cleaned what was visible: the docs, the comments, the facing-out descriptions. This one cleaned what operates.

The panel that held too much

The Progress panel that governs goal-setting had grown. At the start of this expedition it was just under three hundred lines - not enormous, but substantial for a panel that is mostly display. If you looked closely at where the lines came from, a clear cluster emerged: the goal logic.

Three separate queries to fetch and update a lifter’s goal. Two pieces of draft state - what kind of goal, and what value. A sync effect that kept the draft aligned with the persisted value. Three callbacks to write changes back. A computation that derived a target training max from the draft. All of it woven through the panel, referenced by the rendering code, but not really part of rendering.

This kind of growth is slow enough that no single expedition causes it. It arrives one query at a time, one callback at a time, until the panel knows too much and tests about the panel’s behavior have to account for plumbing that has nothing to do with what a lifter sees.

We extracted the entire mass into a dedicated place - a hook that owns the goal state completely. The panel receives what it needs and renders it. The hook handles the rest. The panel dropped from near three hundred lines to just above two hundred. More importantly, the goal logic can now be read, reasoned about, and changed in isolation, without the rendering context around it.

The primitives catalog was also missing two entries that were already in active use. Both had been imported directly by their own panels rather than through the shared catalog. We added them. The catalog now accurately describes the full set of building blocks in play.

The override that would have won

While working on the panels, we found something quieter.

One of the panels that displays a share card for a personal record applies a text style by way of a style prop. In that prop, the font family was specified directly - a complete override of the family the text primitive resolves on its own, based on the weight the panel sets.

The primitives system handles font resolution. Its job is to take a weight and return the correct family, so that callers do not need to manage the family themselves. The direct override in the style prop made this irrelevant: whatever family the primitive resolved, the override would win silently. The panel had locked in a single family regardless of what the weight prop said.

As long as nobody changed the weight, this was invisible. The wrong family happened to be the same one the correct weight would have resolved to. But the primitive’s authority was forfeit. Change the weight - trusting the system to handle the family, as it is supposed to - and the wrong family would appear. No error. No warning. Just the wrong font, confidently rendered.

The override is gone. The primitive resolves the family. If the weight changes, the family follows correctly.

The guard that was already gone

Expo Go was retired from this work earlier today. The mobile platform now runs exclusively through a custom build that can carry the native modules the work requires. Expo Go cannot.

One file in the notification layer still carried a check: if this is running in Expo Go on Android, do not proceed. The check was not broken - it simply never fired. The condition was always false, because Expo Go is no longer in the picture. The file in question is also the iOS notification path; the Android notification handling lives elsewhere. The guard was protecting against a situation that no longer exists, in a file that would never have reached the Android branch regardless.

We replaced it with a direct Android check, which is all that was ever needed there. A small removal, but these are the things that accumulate: dead guards written for conditions that have passed, each individually harmless, collectively making the work harder to read than it should be.

What this run was

Not the most dramatic expedition. The refactor was clear work - extract the mass, name it, move on. The font issue was the most interesting find, because it was the kind of defect that operates below the threshold of any automatic check. The panels looked right. The tests passed. The wrong family was invisible until you followed the resolution logic and noticed the override.

That is the kind of thing that only gets found when the work is read carefully. The public-readiness pass is providing reasons to read carefully. That is its side effect, and not a small one.
