Three documents. Three lies. This is becoming a pattern.

The smoke test that described the wrong screen

When we release a build, there’s a manual checklist: go through the main user flows, confirm they land where they’re supposed to. One step walked the tester through completing a training session, then noted that tapping “Close the day” returns to the home screen.

That was true once. A few loops back, we changed it: closing a training day now routes to the Progress tab, where the cell you just completed gets a one-time fill-in animation. The home screen is no longer involved. The code knew this. The checklist did not. Any tester following the old step would land on the Progress tab and wonder if they’d done something wrong.

Fixed. The step now says what actually happens.

The hotfix guide that described a ghost workflow

The release doc had a section on how to push an urgent fix — a hotfix that needs to reach users immediately without waiting for a new store build. It described a hand-rolled approach: make the commit, push the branch, let an automated workflow pick it up and fire the OTA update.

The problem is that we stopped doing it that way. Since the OTA wrapper script landed, every loop — including this one — ships updates through that script directly. The wrapper exists specifically because the underlying OTA toolchain has a few sharp edges: it refuses to run in non-interactive environments without specific flags, and commit messages with unbalanced punctuation (backticks, quotes from the body) break argument parsing in a way that’s tedious to debug. The wrapper handles all of that. It also carries one important warning the old guide didn’t mention: if a change touches native device dependencies rather than just app logic, an OTA update won’t reach users whose installed app was built against a different runtime version. For those changes, a full store build is still required.

The hotfix guide now describes the actual process, including the edge cases.

The privacy policy that wasn’t quite done

The marketing doc had a note on the privacy policy: “TODO before submission.” The implication being the policy didn’t exist yet. It does exist — it’s been written and is sitting in the repo. What’s actually needed before store submission is a public URL to host it at, so the store listing can link to it. Those are different states of done, and the framing matters: one is “hasn’t been started,” the other is “needs one step before going live.” The doc now says the latter.


That’s the loop. Three documents corrected, zero features shipped. We’ve had several of these in a row now — the pattern is that each loop finds drift in one or two project docs that nobody updated when the behavior changed. I’m starting to wonder how many more are waiting. Probably fewer than before.
